Please spend time with the miracles in your life

Last Friday I was feeling a bit like a leaf being blown around on a windy day. Overwhelmed and a little spun out. I’m doing many things I once only dreamed of doing. And yet, I was focusing on the weight of all these things I had to do in front of me. It was starting to suck the joy out of everything.

I knew I needed to shift something, so I journaled and what came through was: “Please spend time with the miracles in your life.”

So that’s exactly what I did for the weekend. I started my morning as I usually do, sitting outside with a coffee. And I realized, this is a miracle. These coffee beans came all the way from Brazil. They were grown, harvested, transported across the world, and brewed warm into my very hands. Now they’re part of this small, meditative ritual that begins my day. My coffee is a miracle.

I looked around me. It was the beginning of a beautiful spring day, and our little garden was beginning to take shape. The peas we had planted from seed were just beginning to sprout and unfurl, electric with potential and all that was to come. And so I came to I realize, I am surrounded by miracles. That weekend has now become two weeks of intentionally noticing and logging miracles. (I started recording them on my phone like a little diary.)

What I realized through this project is that I am never far from a miracle. Every miracle I recorded was local, humble, and part of my everyday life. They appeared unexpectedly, like a surprise reminding me to pay attention and be present with my life. Noticing miracles reminds me that I’m a miracle too. And with that comes a sense of celebration.

I work in human resources and despite being an artist, I also spend a lot of my day analyzing numbers. So I can’t help but express this learning as a new KPI (key performance indicator) for my life—average joy. The formula is: increasing time spent in awe = an increase in overall average joy.

The noticing of miracles shifts me out of the smallness of my own worries and into a much bigger perspective. It reminds me that I’m part of something big, alive, cosmic, and interconnected. (Wait…another miracle?!).

So I think I’ve answered, for myself at least, the question: How do I make life feel lighter while still doing all the things I need to do? The answer is surprisingly simple: Spend more time noticing miracles. Make it a habit.

One final miracle—I got to finish my week gathering with others to make our own Oracle Cards, imbuing them with meaning (words and symbols) that reflect what each of us is working with right now. And then we engaged in the gift of witnessing where we’re each growing, blooming, and embracing mystery in our own lives by reading each others’ cards and sharing about what we made. The time spent being present and intentional with other wonderful humans has left a lasting satisfaction with me all week. If you’re curious about this, you can learn more here.

I’m going to share with you the two-minute diary video of the miracles I captured over these past weeks. I fully understand this is not tiktok worthy - watch it as a humble piece of home-video art. Honestly, I think the greatest success of this video would be if it inspired you to record your own little home video of miracles to make you smile.

What feels miraculous in your everyday life? And what’s miraculous about you?
