A way of doing, of being done

I’ve been grappling with finding clear, humble, and accessible language to describe what I do and what I’m interested in. And in that process, I’ve been chewing on the difference between an artist’s expression and the medium used to make the art.
And then I was shown this groovy song Style is the Answer by a good friend of mine. And there’s something there, too! Style and expression are deeply intertwined, maybe even kind of the same thing. In the song, the voice says ‘style is the difference, a way of doing, of being done.’
As I’ve reflected on it, I’ve started to formulate this duality within creativity that’s helped me clarify what my focus is. There is the craft—which is the technical skill or ability in the chosen medium—and then there is the expression, which is the translation of the ideas, thoughts, feelings, beliefs, dreams, and desires into something external.
And in this exploration, I’m not saying one is bad or good—both are necessary. But I can play with the emphasis I put on one or the other. And for me, this was a useful exercise in feeling into what matters to me about the creative process and how to know when I’m making art in a way that is fulfilling.

Where I’ve landed is this: I’m not a technically proficient artist, and that’s intentional. Developing technical skill is not something I’m particularly interested in, although it happens over time naturally. What I care about is ease of self-expression.
And for the millionth time, I see how art becomes a metaphor for life.
My life feels messy and full lately. I’ve set a lot of things in motion and I’m learning how to balance it all, even though I can’t be aware of or control it all at once. It’s a new level of letting go of perfectionism. And my current approach to this pickle is style. How do I ride this big wave in my life with as much style as I can muster? Maybe I can’t do it perfectly, but where can I do it in a way that feels like me? Finding the honesty and courage required to locate my way of doing things amidst the discomfort of life asking more.
And if I’m not sure what that means, then I can simply take a moment to groove on it: Style is the Answer by Mash.
What do you know about your style or way of doing?
